A court commitment is a judicial order directing the confinement of an individual to a correctional facility, jail, or other custodial institution following conviction, sentencing, or as a condition of probation revocation. It may also refer to civil commitments for mental health treatment or competency restoration under separate statutory authority. The commitment authorizes the detention and specifies its duration and conditions.
