Las Cruces Man, 34, Sentenced for Second-Degree Murder and Courtroom Attack

Alejandro Nevarez, a 34-year-old resident of Las Cruces, was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on Oct. 1, 2026. Records indicate he was processed under a court commitment following a transfer from the Penitentiary of New Mexico. He is currently held without bond under booking number 2600007918. According to news reports and court records, Nevarez was convicted of second-degree murder for the death of his stepfather, who was killed with a hammer. Following that conviction, he received a 16-year prison sentence. Additional reports indicate that during his murder trial, Nevarez was also found guilty of attacking a courtroom security deputy.
